The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently announced that the agency has re-issued a research permit to explore lake whitefish stocks in southern Lake Huron.

This is the second of a three-year study in which one commercial angler has been permitted to set large mesh trap nets on experimental fishing grounds located several miles south of Harbor Beach and north of Port Sanilac.

DNR personnel will monitor and evaluate the health of fish populations again in 2016, as well as determine the long-term potential for a sustainable and profitable commercial lake whitefish fishery.

“There are very few areas of the Great Lakes that can accommodate new commercial fishing, and southern Lake Huron is one. This year should provide a clearer picture on the health of the whitefish stocks and the possibility of expanding Michigan’s natural resources-based economy” said Tom Goniea, the DNR’s commercial fishing program administrator.
