As with other Gulf states, the shrimp fishery is a vital component of the Texas commercial fishing sector. Other important fisheries include blue crabs, oysters, black drum, red snapper, vermillion snapper, grouper, mullets, and catfish.
Major Texas fishing ports include Brownsville-Port Isabel, Galveston, Palacios, and Port Arthur.
In state waters, commercial fishing is regulated by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. In the Gulf of Mexico Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (GMFMC) manages fisheries.
